I always thought I had time. I could still tell her. Thought she knew in her own way without me telling. Then she turned up with a secret lover and I was left reeling. It was far too late to tell her how I was feeling.

In the half light she cradles the baby. His little fingers play with her hair. He should be mine. He should be ours. If I weren't such a coward, lost in denial, they'd both be in my arms tonight.

The stone is cold, biting into my back, the moonlight merciless. The ghost of her stalks my nights.

He comes to hold her. She leans into his shoulder and I've lost her forever.

The curtains fall on my dreams; their firelight flickers and their silhouettes press close.

Passion lost blasts me. I squeeze out the pain and tears burn, but I won't falter. I'll work beside her each day. Let the what-ifs rain on me and run off. I'll never tell her unless she asks me. Can't ruin her love. And I'll pray she doesn't want my blessing.
